Readers' Benches

As some of you know a proposed publication Readers' Benches is already in the early stages of production, with several studio and 'al fresco' shoots arranged for the summer.

Although a publisher has yet to 'come on board', Felix Dennis has hinted at setting up a whole new imprint for the genre, his people are conducting market research and a feasibility study.

Surprisingly Richard Desmond is playing hard-to-get, seeking reassurances regarding issues of 'taste'!

It has been said that pitching Dennis against Desmond was an act of genius by the Benchism committee, only time will tell.

As yet no word back from Emap or IPC, it is speculated (though without foundation) that they may go head-to-head with their own titles in the genre, without the involvement, or blessing, of the Benchism governing body.

In any event, we're hopeful that the first edition of the magazine will be available in time for International Bench Day (6th September 2007).

Bench Abuse Averted

According to the BBC News website a local council has brought to an end the regular abuse of a bench in their charge.

The bench, in the village of East Pawle, South Devon, was being abused by mobile phone users unable to get a signal. There is no mobile phone mast in the vicinity.

Mobile users would climb onto the bench and could be seen teetering at jaunty angles in order to acquire 'a signal'. This resulted in damage to the bench, perhaps the least of which was muddy footprints, which prevented citizens from utilising the bench for its intended purpose.

The BBC reported that Julian Brazil, District councilor said: "People have been complaining the bench is getting broken so it has been decided to get some sort of mounting block that people can use to get reception."

The block is to be installed at a cost of £100.

However, it transpires that the bench has been taken out of service, its fate is unknown. A sad day for Benchism...
