A memorial bench to the young victims of the Babes in the
Wood murders in Brighton, Sussex, has been vandalised.
A 1m-long (3.3ft) piece of wood was deliberately cut from
the bench, which sits alongside a plaque and two trees in
Wild Park. It is close to where the bodies of Nicola Fellows
and Karen Hadaway were found in 1986.
Police said on Friday that following inquiries in the area
the damaged section of the bench had been repaired. The vandalism
was first noticed on Wednesday. Nicola's uncle, Ian Heffron,
described the act as "evil,
calculated damage".
"Why would somebody want to do that, what possesses
someone to come along and desecrate a memorial to two little
girls?" he asked.
His 10-year-old niece and her friend Karen, who was nine,
were found strangled in Wild Park in October 1986.
Russell Bishop, then 19, was acquitted of their murders
the following year. After a review of the case, Sussex Police
said last year that there was not enough new evidence to
prosecute any possible suspects.
